Kiss Me Stupid talks to Melbourne Teckno duo Oddphonic
How did Oddphonic come to be?
We were in a band called The Freak Technique for a couple of years with some amazing muso’s and singers. When that wound up we both wanted to get back to our House and Techno roots and formed Oddphonic.
How would you best explain the music you guys produce?
Funky, Quirky Tech-House. It’s definitely is a combination of the Music we make Solo, Ive been making Jackin Chicago style house for years, And Craig’s been Producing Rolling Outdoor techno for just as long, The Oddphonic sound is definitely a combination of the two.
Who are your main influences?
Fergus: It’s pretty broad really, some artists that have influenced our production would definitely be Maceo Plex, Sebastion Leger, Christian Burkhardt and Daniel Steinberg. I also get hugely inspired by Melbourne artists who are making some really amazing music like Timmus, Uone, Tim Augmented McCallum, PlanetJumper and Louis Emile.
Craig: Its really hard to narrow it down but over the years so many artist have influenced me in one way or another but some that stand out are Format B , Jakob Hilden, Red Robin, Kabel and Liebe, AudioJack, Super Flu, Butch, Superpitcher, Ian Pooly, Henry Siaz, Ten walls, Matador the list goes on. It also Helps being surrounded by a bunch of sick cunts that are mega talented like Muska,Timmus, Uone, Ehsan Gelsi ,Planet Jumper Boys and the Thank You City Boys.
Favourite James Bond actor and why?
Fergus: Daniel Craig…. Total Badass
Craig: David Niven because he had a mean MO
You guys have a long history of DJing but these days you play LIVE. What do you get from playing LIVE that you wouldn’t get from DJing?
Stress. Performing your own music to a dancefloor is really accompanied by a high level of anxiety, but if it all works out it also has a great payoff. We play live keys etc and a lot of it’s improvised, so it’s a great way to mix it up from gig to gig and keep the set fresh and customized to the dancefloor.
Describe your first Kiss?
Fergus: Lets just say my long term memories a bit shabby but it was probably awesome, I think.
Craig: WET WITH LOTS OF TEETH.
Besides Oddphonic do you guys have any other musical side projects?
Fergus: I’ve been running Smash Bang Records along with Timmus for two years now and we’re pretty much using it as a Launchpad for young Melbourne artists who’s music is a little bit left of centre. It’s a great way to discover new music and help producers who are just breaking into the industry.
Craig: No, unfortunately time does not permit.
Speaking of record labels, do you guys have any releases on the horizon?
We’ve got our Funkolaboration 2 EP which is a caloborative series we’re doing with amazing Melbourne act PlanetJumper. It’ll be coming out within the month on Smash Bang and we’re working on Releases for Ugenius Music, Sprout Recordings and Cajual.
If you guys could live the life of any musician dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Fergus: Moodyman for sure.
Craig: Robbie William, he has all the fun.
