KISSmeSTUPID talks to Melbourne DJ/Producer/Event Organiser and all round good guy, Jacob Malmo.
Describe your first kiss?
Hmmmmmmmm, I am pretty sure I was 12 and heading into Year 7. I grew up on the coast in NSW, so during summer holidays we used to get a heap of tourist’s from Canberra and Sydney come and visit. I remember picking up a chick at one of the local summer disco’s. From then on we more likely resembled a couple of people eating each other. I don’t think it was pretty.
How would you describe the music you play and write and who are your influences?
As long as it has groove and feeling, I’m into it. I like to consider myself quite eclectic when it comes to music, so I can play anytime anywhere to best suit the mood. I used to listen to a lot of Salmonella dub, St Germain and Massive Attack growing up so they definitely got me intrigued with electronic music.
In terms of suits, you can hear me playing anything from slow house/disco to techno.
Are yo a fan of any artists that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
I secretly really like John Farnham. Not sure if thats a good or a bad thing.
What was your favourite thing to do as a kid?
Growing up on the coast I spent the majority of my time in the water surfing and playing on the beach.
What are you up to these days?
I’m really happy with all my residencies at the moment and thankfully getting booked a heap around town, including a lot of international support and warm up gigs.
I’ve recently just set up a studio at home and whenever I find the time, I am honing my skills on Ableton Live 9 suite. It’s a slow process with so much to learn but I’ll get there. I have a lot of great producers around me so I’m thankful that I can learn from them. Certainly speeds up my understanding.
MAMA SAID (Jacobs event brand) is into its 5th year now. It’s gone so quickly. We throw a monthly party at Revolver and help out with a lot of international gigs and festivals. I’m hoping to get into touring some of our favourite artists soon as well.
What did MAMA say?
The party never stops.
You’re a busy man, what do you like to do in your free time?
Haha yeah I’m busy. But I like it that way. It’s hectic sometimes but I like to live a fast paced life!
Monday’s are my super chillout day, I recently purchased an XBOX so I have been getting into that a bit.
Hanging out with the girlfriend isn’t too bad either 😉
What’s your favourite hang over food?
You can’t go past pizza.
Now for a serious question. How much time do you spend grooming your beard each week?
Haha, I generally wash it every night and give it a comb. That’s about it. It’s naturally pretty soft. It needs some shaping at times, though my hairdresser usually does that.
What was your favourite board game growing up and were you any good?
I’d have to say Pictionary, it was always good for a laugh. I’m a pretty pathetic drawer so no, I don’t think I won much.
What’s install for the future of Jacob Malmo?
Definitely releasing more original music and remixes and learning. I’m playing at Strawberry Fields, The Awakenings Stage at Stereosonic and The Cocoon Stage at FMF over summer so definitely looking forward to those. I am constantly trying to build my network and hoping to play overseas next year.
I recently bought into a bar with a bunch of other Melbourne legends including Luke Mcd, Garrath Holt and more. We have named it Norma Jeane (Marilyn Monroes originally name). The theme will be pop art with with a focus on cocktails, house music and disco. We launch on November 1 so look out for it.
Redtube, YouPorn or Elephanttube?
Youjizz haha.
Where can people find you djing?
Fridays you can catch me at Ms Collins, Saturdays @ Norma Jeane and onesixone, Sundays @ Metropol/Secret Garden and The Saint Hotel. Monthly at Revolver Fridays and Sundays
You can also catch me at The Vineyard, Pawn and Co, Brown Alley and other venues for guest spots.
